What you will study

The CertHE in Applied Computing is a Level 4 programme designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of computing through a combination of structured teaching, guided practical activity, and independent learning. The delivery approach is aligned with ̽»¨ÏµÁÐ’s block teaching model, where you will focus on one 30-credit module at a time, allowing for deep and sustained engagement with each subject area. Teaching will be delivered by experienced staff at Leicester College, with a focus on building foundational knowledge and essential skills across four core modules:

  • Foundations of Computing
  • Programming in Python
  • Data Analytics and Statistics
  • Information Systems

Note: All modules are indicative and based on the current academic session. Course information is correct at the time of publication and is subject to review. Exact modules may, therefore, vary for your intake in order to keep content current. If there are changes to your course we will, where reasonable, take steps to inform you as appropriate.

The teaching strategy emphasises active, applied learning. You will engage in a range of structured activities, including tutor-led lectures, interactive workshops, lab-based sessions, and group tasks. These will be supported by formative exercises designed to develop problem-solving skills, technical confidence, and conceptual understanding in key areas of computing.

Independent learning is also encouraged through structured self-study activities, supported by digital resources, reading lists, and regular access to academic staff. The overall approach is supportive and developmental, helping you to transition into higher education and progress toward Level 5 study.

Assessment strategies are tailored to the applied nature of the programme and the learning outcomes of each module. You will be assessed through a variety of coursework-based methods, including practical computing tasks, written reports, technical documentation, group projects, and presentations. Assessment design reflects the real-world context of computing and prioritises the demonstration of your practical competence and academic understanding.

Each module incorporates formative assessment opportunities to provide you with timely feedback and direction for improvement. Assessments are aligned with ̽»¨ÏµÁÐ’s academic regulations and are clearly outlined in module specifications to ensure clarity and transparency. This balanced and inclusive approach to teaching and assessment ensures students are supported in developing the skills, knowledge, and confidence required for you to progress into Level 5 study and beyond.
